Beds including mattresses, mattress overlays, or mattress replacement systems can be provided with bladders or air sacks to support a person and to provide adjustable support and firmness characteristics. The support and firmness characteristics of the mattress can be adjusted by inflating the air sacks to increase the firmness and support characteristics of the mattress or deflating the air sacks to provide plusher firmness and support characteristics. A majority of bed mattresses on the market today generally consist of a plurality of coil springs linked together to form a mattress core, overtop of which is layered a foam and cloth cover. A standard bed construction which has been popular for some time includes a frame for supporting a box spring. The box spring, in turn, is designed to support a mattress. A mattress generally comprises a plurality of interconnected coil springs together with some border wires forming a generally rectangular structure and an upper layer including the cover or ticking which envelopes the entire structure. The upper surface provides the immediate perception of softness or "feel" for the sleeper. Mattresses are available in a variety of sizes and are also constructed in various ways. Quilting is a special art in the general field of sewing in which patterns are stitched through a plurality of layers of material over a two-dimensional area of the material. A coil spring mattresses generally comprises many coil springs extending between upper and lower mattress faces to support the upper and lower faces. Waterbeds, or fluid floatation sleeping systems, have become increasingly popular in recent years. A waterbed provides comfortably uniform support to the supine body. However, the basic waterbed has certain disadvantages which have limited the appeal and market. In convertible furniture, such as futons, the furniture includes a frame that is movable between an upright, seating position and a horizontal, sleeping position. Many types of furniture, such as a dresser, a cabinet, desk, or an entertainment center, have one or more removable drawers therein. The drawers are generally guided into and out of a corresponding drawer opening in the framework of the furniture by sliding along a guide rail or other guiding means. Bed frames are characteristically comprised of a headboard, a footboard and a pair of interconnecting side rails which are rigidly secured to the opposite sides of the headboards and footboards to form a rectangular frame for supporting a rectangular mattress and bed spring. Typically a bed frame includes a pair of side rails connected by head and foot sections. Further, such bed frame structures typically include a series of transverse slats that extend between the side rails and which supports a box spring or mattress. Adjustable beds have long been recognized as being helpful in relieving muscle tension and fatigue. Also, by permitting the separate adjustment of the inclination of the head portion and the foot portion, the user is able to configure the bed to best meet the individual comfort needs of his or her body. Adjustable beds have found widespread use beyond nonambulatory patients and are used in many homes among persons of all age groups, in particular beds that raise the head and/or feet. Among the devices used to raise the head or feet are inflatable air bladders intended for use with conventional beds. Variable width beds, that is beds that are adjustable between a narrow width and a wide width, are employed in many circumstances. For example, a bariatric bed is designed to support an obese person and, therefore, generally will have a wide width to accommodate the patient.
