Bed frame

Bed frames are utilized for supporting either a mattress or a combination of box springs and mattress. A bed frame consists of a plurality of generally L-shaped side and cross frame members detachably secured to one another for supporting the mattress and box spring unit between a foot board and head board. Typically a bed frame includes a pair of side rails connected by head and foot sections. While there may be differing ways to affix the side rails to the headboard and footboard, one of the most common ways is to bolt the side rails to the footboard and headboard or to assembly the side rail to the footboard and headboard with the use of a set of vertically space apart hooks that extend outward from the ends of the side rails and which enter vertically disposed slots formed in the headboard and footboard. Within each of the slots there are located a set of transversely located pins that cross the slots and are securely mounted in the headboard and footboard. With the pin and hook system, the hooks enter the slots and hook over the pins to secure the side rails to the headboard and the footboard. Beds and bed frames constructed for home, nursing and hospital healthcare environments provide for articulation of the frame to tilt one or more sections for the patient's comfort or care. With the push of a button or lever, the back section can be made to tilt between a completely flat, reclined position and a forward, inclined position, or one or more leg sections may be made to bend or tilt between a generally flat and horizontal position and a drawn-up, bent position. Folding bed frame structures of various configurations and constructions are well known and in widespread use. Convertible sofa beds having widely varying folding bed frame structures are in common use.  Sofa sleepers comprise an upholstered sofa frame in which a folding bed frame structure is mounted for selective articulated movement between a folded condition fully contained within the sofa frame for seating use as a sofa and an unfolded condition extending outwardly from the sofa frame for sleeping use as a bed. Air mattresses have become a more popular alternative to a conventional coil spring mattress. One distinct advantage of an air mattress is the ability of the air mattress to be deflated and collapsed into a relatively small package for storage and/or transportation. Air mattresses are particularly convenient for persons who move from place to place and do not want to transport a conventional mattress during these moves. In general, bed frames are well known and are comprised of various structural members such as side rails and cross members that interconnect the side rails and provide a relatively rigid structure of predetermined dimensions in order to support a box spring and a mattress.
