Bed mattress
A standard mattress generally includes a set of metal springs or coils mounted either on a base under a pad, or sandwiched in the center of a pair of pads. The metal springs and pad or pads are then covered with a strapping material. The typical mattress has a tufted surface with shallow indentations. To provide greater comfort and support for the body, and to protect the mattress itself, a pad is often placed between the mattress and the sheets. Basically there are six types of mattresses, innerspring mattresses, foam mattresses, air mattresses, padded futon, water-filled bladder mattresses, ie. waterbed, and the hydraulic mattress. Resilient mattresses may generally be classified into two broad categories based on the components which give resiliency to the mattresses, namely coil spring mattresses and foam mattresses. Foam mattresses are lightweight and more efficiently manufactured manufacture as compared to coil spring mattresses. Foam mattresses are generally made from an elastomeric material which is initially in a liquid state and is treated in such a way as to evolve gas which causes the material to expand by foaming to form a resilient spongy mass that either sets on its own or requires some subsequent curing step. The two most common types of futon mattresses are formed from either cotton or wool batting or foam, or a combination thereof, to provide the required cushioning when the mattress is positioned in either the upright position or the sleeping position. Currently, futon mattresses having a polyurethane foam core are the most popular due to their light weight and superior cushioning capabilities. Mattresses that include air bladders to support bedridden patients in hospitals are known. Such mattresses typically include apparatus for inflating the air bladders to predetermined pressure levels and for maintaining and adjusting the pressure in the air bladders after inflation. Inflatable mattresses, such as waterbeds, are an inexpensive alternative to the conventional type of health-care bed. Waterbeds typically have a flat support and a rectangular frame enclosing the sides of a water-filled bladder that rests on the support. The bladder is covered with a protective sheet, and the patient rests on the covered bladder. Mattresses are made in a small variety of standard sizes and a much larger variety of combinations of interiors and covers to provide a wide range of support and comfort features and to cover a wide range of product prices. To provide variety of support and comfort requirements, the top and bottom panels of mattress covers are quilted using an assortment of fills and a selection of quilted patterns.
