Mattress pad

Mattress pads and covers are used to protect the outer surface of mattresses and to cushion the user from protruding buttons on the mattress. The pads or covers are generally washable and may be replaced at less cost than replacing the mattress. It is known to use mattress pads, or mattress covers, for maintaining mattresses in clean condition and for providing extra padding between the mattress and the bottom sheet on a bed. Mattress pads are in common use for placement between the top surface of a mattress and a bed sheet, so as to shield the mattress from becoming soiled and to provide extra comfort to the person sleeping on the bed. Mattress pads have found wide favor in the bedding industry, and especially in the medical bedding area, by enhancing user comfort and reducing fatigue and bedsores. These mattress pads are generally made of a foamed polyurethane pad having a convolution pattern comprising a regular pattern of evenly spaced peaks and valleys on at least the side facing the user's body. Mattress pads generally have, at the very least, a flat top portion of quilted fabric or water-proof material for overlying the top surface of the mattress. Many mattress pads also have some means for holding the top portion in place on the mattress. Mattress pads are commonly used and are available in various forms. In a typical fitted mattress pad, depending side panels are sewn or otherwise attached to the pad itself to secure the mattress pad to the mattress. In turn, some structure is provided to secure the side panels to the mattress so that the mattress pad will remain in place and not slip or be dislodged from the mattress. A mattress pad consists of a flat top portion with a skirt portion hanging from its sides. The bottom edge of the skirt portion is usually elasticized. In use, the skirt portion fits around the sides and tucks under the bottom edges of the mattress to help hold the top portion of the mattress pad in place on the mattress' top surface. Typically, the mattress pads include a skirt or other connection means that fits about the corners of the mattress so as to hold the mattress pad in position on the bed. Then the fitted or "contoured" bottom bed sheet is placed about the mattress over the mattress pad, with its skirt placed about the mattress. Among the most common forms of mattress pad is one having a quilted top platform and a side skirt of a material that is cut in one or more panels and sewn to fit a standard size mattress, such as twin, full, queen, king or California king. Some mattress pads have elastic bands attached diagonally across their corners to hold them in place. In use, these elastic bands pass around and under the corners of the mattress to keep the top portion of the mattress pad spread neatly over the top of the mattress. Mattress pads, or mattress covers, for maintaining the cleanliness and neat appearance of mattresses are well known. Mattress pads generally comprise a top portion of a quilted fabric material or of a nonporous waterproof sanitary material such as a thin sheet of rubber, and some means for holding the pad onto the mattress. Some baby changing pads and bedcovers such as, for example, mattress pads are typically designed to have a substantially waterproof major surface with the remaining major surface having at lest some moisture absorbency. Mattress pads are available in predetermined lengths and widths that conform to the lengths and widths of mattresses, i.e., twin, full, queen and king. Mattress pads are factory cut to match the "standard" predetermined lengths and widths of conventional mattress sizes. The various sized pads are then packaged, separately marked as twin, full, queen and king.
