Pillowtop mattress

A standard mattress comprises a core contained within an attractive fabric envelope. The mattress core includes an inner spring assembly comprising an array of coil springs, covered top and bottom by pads of felt or other material. Alternatively, the core may be made of foam, or closed chambers containing water or air. It is covered by an envelope made of top and bottom pieces of textile fabric whose edges are interconnected by sewing to a fabric border strip that runs around the periphery of the mattress. The seams may be protected by a decorative fabric tape. Additional comfort in a mattress construction may be provided by a "pillow top" or "quilt top". Such a mattress has a pillow or quilt sewn to both the top and bottom of the mattress. Pillow-top mattresses have become fashionable in recent years. The quilt top may itself include fabric ticking, cloth or fiber layers and foam layers. Use of convoluted foam cushions are known in the quilt top layer of mattresses. While the pillow top contains its own padding, distinct from that of the core mattress, it is not separable, and in fact is sewn to the mattress. The pillow top appears to be separate, however, because corners are formed at the top of the mattress border, and at the bottom of the pillow top border, so that a neck is formed in the material. The pillowtop pad lays right on top of the mattress. Then the mattress pad and fitted sheet go over both the pillowtop pad and the mattress itself holding the pad in place. In addition, the pillowtop pads are quite substantial in weight, and the mattress and pillowtop pad coverings are cotton on cotton, rather than a slippery polyester fabric. The pillowtop pad will not slip around. Through the provision of gussets, one for each of the top and bottom panels, such mattresses are constructed to appear as though a comforter or pillow has been placed on a conventional mattress to provide a more luxurious and comfortable appearance. The gussets extend around the perimeter of the mattress and connect the side panels to top and bottom panels of the mattress cover.
