Bookshelf

Shelves for books and other items which are stored or displayed in a similar manner have been in existence for centuries and come in many sizes and descriptions. Bookshelves are extensively used to support books, files, magazines, folders and the like in a generally upright, side-by-side position with the spine or edges of such books extending upward from the shelf. Generally, bookshelves used in libraries or stack rooms of public institutions are vertically arranged panels where books and other data are inserted and stored at multi-staged space thereof. The shelf itself is typically a horizontal member extending between two fixed end walls which may be part of the elongated side walls of a bookcase which supports a number of vertically spaced, horizontal shelves. Bookshelves are frequently constructed in a modular fashion with shelves spaced apart by spacing means such as bricks and concrete blocks. Bookshelves are often assembled with concrete blocks, bricks and the like used as spacers and supports between shelves. This type of structure is popular for temporary shelf assemblies, but the blocks are heavy and inconvenient to move. Bookshelf supports presently exist in which apertures are provided for the passage of screws, which pass through or across the bookshelf itself.
