Computer desk

The recent and rapid increase in sales of personal computers has, among other things, given rise to rapid advances in desks and other computer related work stations. While desktop computers have been in use in offices for an extended period of time, laptop computers also are becoming prevalent in offices. Numerous desks, keyboard supports and the like have been designed to accommodate desktop computers and components therefore. Desktop computers commonly consist of a tower configuration central processing unit, a monitor, a keyboard, speakers, a plurality of disk drives, and a dot matrix, ink jet, or laser printer. Such computer components are commonly assembled upon a common desktop for utilization by a computer operator seated at a common desk chair. Computer and its peripherals have gained a high popularity in many developed countries, and thus computer desks are of high demand for placing computer and its peripherals. The design of computer desks particularly emphasizes on the practicality, convenience, multiple functions, comfort, and compliance to ergonomics, therefore there are various patterns and sizes. There are various models for the consumer's choice to place computer equipments and allow users to sit comfortably in front of the computer desk for an easy, convenient, and pleasant operation. In order to accommodate more computer equipments within a limited space, a multiple-layer structure is adopted and such structure has become the present mainstream design for computer desks. A typical computer desk is composed of a desktop surface for receiving part of a computer system, such as the computer, a CRT monitor, and a keyboard required to access the computer. The keyboard is usually placed on the desktop surface or surfaces at a forward position and at a comfortable distance from the operator's knees. A regular computer desk is normally made of thick and solid materials; to facilitate transportation, all components have been designed to enable their assembly with screws. Computer desks comprising an additional movable shelf placed directly below a stationary upper shelf are generally more compact than other desks and therefore more suitable for small office and home use. In such computer desks, the total desktop surface therefore includes the stationary part or upper shelf and the movable part or lower shelf.
